Hidden from the main roads, Christianity Fangcun Church stands as a testament to faith and resilience in Guangzhou. Let’s delve into the story of this house of worship.
Christianity Fangcun Church began as Shangfangcun Church. It was part of the Church of Christ in China. Dr. Henry V. Noyes from the Presbyterian Church in the United States of America established it in 1891. He did so within the Pui Ying School.
As the congregation grew, a new church became necessary. In November 1923, Pingmin Church opened on Pingmin Street in Shangfangcun Village. Grace Tang served as the first pastor.
In 1960, church union led to the merging of Fangcun Christian Church and Baihedong Church. However, this unity faced challenges. The church closed in 1966 during a turbulent period.
Religious activities resumed in 1986. The congregation persevered. In 1996, Christianity Fangcun Church found a new home. It moved to a two-story building on Xinyi Road in Xifangcun Village. The building had a bell tower and each floor spanned about 400 square meters.
Interestingly, the history of Christianity Fangcun Church traces back even further. Its origins link to the Youlanmen Church of the Lutheran Church. This dates back to 1867.
Rev. Henry V. Noyes also founded a Gothic-style church in 1891. The Presbyterian Church of North America established other institutions in Fangcun. These included True Light Middle School, Hui’ai Hospital and Ming Sun School for the blind. These aimed to improve local medical and educational facilities.
In 1960, several churches merged into one. This included Fangcun Church of the Lutheran Church, Baihedong Church, the gospel boat and Pingmin Church. It was situated in Pingmin Church and later renamed Fangcun Church.
The government expropriated the building for a tunnel project in 1993. A new building for Christianity Fangcun Church opened on September 5, 1997.
Today, Christianity Fangcun Church offers Sunday services in both Cantonese and Mandarin. Prayer meetings and Bible study sessions also take place.
Remember the story of Christianity Fangcun Church. It is a beacon of faith that has weathered many storms. Its congregation continues to thrive.
