What began with just six members has grown into a congregation of thousands. This is Christian Stronghold Baptist Church. It stands as a testament to faith and community in Philadelphia.
Christian Stronghold Church started small. In February 1966, Reverend Willie Richardson and Harvey Preston organized the church. Reverend Richardson suggested the name Christian Stronghold Church. The original members included Patricia Richardson and George Richardson with their wives and Harvey Preston with his wife.
The church’s goals were clear from the start. They wanted to glorify Jesus. They aimed to reach the unsaved and support missionaries. Developing Christians and establishing a Bible-based church were also key.
On March 20, 1966, Pastor Willie Richardson was ordained. The ceremony took place at 5224 W. Girard Avenue. Dr. Berry Cooper of Truelight Missionary Baptist Church led the service. Harvey Preston became the first Deacon in June 1966.
In 1967, Christian Stronghold Church moved to 5310 W. Girard Avenue. Pastor Richardson’s vision was unfolding. The church received its charter in November 1968. The Common Pleas Court of Pennsylvania granted it.
December 10, 1974, marked another move. The church relocated to 658 N. 52nd Street. Pastor Richardson committed to full-time service. He started the Advanced Discipleship School. It met every Sunday and continues today as the Church Bible Institute.
God’s faithfulness led to another move. On March 20, 1979, Christian Stronghold Church moved to 1207 N. 52nd Street. The one-aisle church expanded. It became a five-aisle church. Christian Stronghold was on the move.
About 30 years ago, the congregation found its current home. It is located at 4701 Lancaster Avenue. This location can accommodate 1100 worshippers. Christian Stronghold Church is not affiliated with a larger Christian denomination. It emphasizes the Bible as a daily guide.
Pastor Richardson led three services each Sunday. Around 2,500 congregants attended. The church is made up of smaller groups called cells. These groups meet during the week for Bible study.
Christian Stronghold takes marriage seriously. They provide family training. This happens before and after marriage. They address social issues such as violence. Some members formed a neighborhood watch group.
Every May, the church hosts a carnival. It includes rides, games and food. The church also offers many outreach ministries. These ministries include health fairs and youth programming.
Christian Stronghold Baptist Church stands as a beacon of hope. It reflects love, community, and devotion to faith in West Philadelphia.
