What if I told you this statue embodies the spirit of Erfurt’s floral fame? This is the Christian Reichart Statue. It stands as a tribute to a man who transformed Erfurt into a horticultural haven.

Christian Reichart was born in Erfurt in 1685. He wasn’t just a gardener; he was a visionary. Reichart pioneered the commercial horticulture that would define Erfurt for generations. His work elevated Erfurt’s horticulture to new heights. This earned the city a reputation throughout Europe.

Reichart mastered what we now call intensive agriculture. He focused on improving crop yields and farming techniques. Watercress was one of his specialties. He devised methods for its systematic cultivation. This ensured a steady supply of this sought-after vegetable.

But Reichart’s influence extended far beyond watercress. He introduced new vegetable varieties to Erfurt. He acclimated cauliflower seeds from Cyprus. This laid the groundwork for Erfurt’s renowned cauliflower cultivation. By the mid-18th century, he traded seeds of 93 different vegetables across Central Europe.

Reichart wasn’t just a practical gardener. He was also a scholar. His six-volume “Land- und Gartenschatz” published in 1753 became a seminal work. This comprehensive treasure trove covered all aspects of agriculture and horticulture.

Beyond his horticultural pursuits, Christian Reichart served as a city councilor from 1752. He championed the cause of scientifically trained gardeners. He advocated for reforms in agricultural education at universities.

The Christian Reichart Statue before you wasn’t always here. It was originally erected in 1867 on what was then Reichartplatz. Later the square was renamed Kaiserplatz, then Karl-Marx-Platz. In 1900, the statue was moved to this spot near the Pfortchen bridge. This placed him closer to the area where he once worked.

The inscription reads: “To the Council Master Christian Reichart, the highly meritorious patron of agriculture and horticulture. Erected 1867.”

Reichart’s impact resonates far beyond this statue. A school in Erfurt bears his name. A bust of Reichart stands before the horticultural college. The Reichart Prize is awarded since 2014.

So, as you stand before the Christian Reichart Statue, remember the man who cultivated Erfurt’s floral legacy. He transformed not only the landscape but also the city’s identity. He ensured Erfurt would forever be known as a city of flowers.
