Born Christian Urs Quadflieg on April 11, 1945, in Vaxjo, Sweden, he was the son of actor Will Quadflieg and Countess Benita von Vegesack. Growing up in Hamburg, he absorbed the city’s cultural spirit. He completed his schooling with the Abitur here. Later, he pursued acting studies in Bochum.
Quadflieg initially faced rejection from the Westfalische Schauspielschule Bochum. Despite that setback, he persevered. Between 1969 and 1973, he honed his skills with theater companies in Oberhausen, Wuppertal, and Basel. Later, he graced stages in Berlin, Munich, Vienna, and Zurich.
From 1974, Christian Quadflieg became a freelance actor. He took on classical roles. These included Marquis Posa in Schiller’s “Don Carlos” and Ferdinand in “Kabale und Liebe.” He also appeared in Buchner’s “Dantons Tod” at the Salzburg Festival.
His television breakthrough came in 1977 with “Reifezeugnis,” an episode of the “Tatort” series. He played a teacher involved with a student played by Nastassja Kinski. Following that success, he appeared in “Der Alte,” “Derrick,” and “Das Traumschiff”.
Christian Quadflieg secured the title role in “Der Landarzt.” He portrayed Dr. Karsten Matthiesen in 42 episodes from 1987 to 1992. He also directed some of these episodes. This role cemented his place in German television history.
Quadflieg was married to actress Renate Reger. She also appeared in “Der Landarzt.” During his time in Oberhausen, he used the name Christian Urs. He wanted to avoid benefiting from his famous father’s name. The family later made their home in Hamburg.
In later years, Christian Quadflieg toured Germany. He presented readings of works by poets like Eduard Morike and Heinrich Heine. He also lent his voice to audiobooks. He was the German voice of Dean Stockwell in “Paris, Texas” and Robert Taylor in “Broadway Melody of 1936”. He intentionally sought roles of higher quality and reduced his television appearances.
