Gazing at the Christian Fellowship Church, one might wonder about the stories held within its walls. Christian Fellowship Church sits on the former Emerald Hills Golf Course and Country Club. It has resided there since 1963. The church’s journey actually began much earlier, in 1887. It started as the Second Congregational Church. It later became known as Logan Heights Congregational Church in 1905 after moving to the Logan Heights community. The church’s history is deeply intertwined with San Diego’s development. A quote from the early days describes its humble beginnings: “The Second Congregational Church, known as the Logan Heights Church, had its beginning on the second Sunday in November, 1887.” Rev. A. B. White from Toledo, Ohio began preaching in a schoolhouse on Twenty-seventh Street. Later, on February 19, 1888, a new building was dedicated at Twenty-sixth Street and Kearney Avenue. The land was a gift from the Land & Town Company. Members of the First Congregational Church generously contributed to the building fund. The name changed to Christian Fellowship Congregational Church in 1950. In 1957, the congregation joined the newly formed United Church of Christ. Over the years, numerous clergy have guided the Christian Fellowship Church. From Rev. A.B. White in 1887 to Rev. Dr. J. Lee Hill, Jr. who served from 2010 to 2021, each leader contributed to the church’s unique character. Today, Christian Fellowship Church is known for its progressive and inclusive values, striving to live out its faith through social justice work and community engagement. It stands as a testament to its enduring presence in San Diego, a place where history and faith intertwine.
