“Family of God” resonates profoundly in Southwest Detroit. Christian Family Ministries began with a simple yet powerful vision. Sue Hatcher-Wilson saw a need and acted.
It was January 1996. Sue worked as a Social Worker. She realized her clients needed more than social services. They needed hope rooted in faith. Lutheran City Ministries encouraged her. Sue started a Bible study support group. It met weekly at the Clark St. YMCA.
The group offered Bible studies. It provided emotional support and prayer. Worship filled their gatherings. They served an under-resourced community. Attendees struggled with addiction and homelessness. Mental and medical health issues were common. Besides spiritual support, they offered coffee and snacks. Soon, sandwiches and meals became regular.
Christian Family Ministries grew steadily. It began serving meals and holding Bible studies more often. The group moved several times to accommodate its growth. In 2002 Jim Hill joined. He became an integral part of the ministry. By 2005 Jim was ordained. He served as the Senior Pastor at Christian Family Ministries.
In July 2013 Lutheran City Ministries could no longer support Christian Family Ministries. God provided through local churches. They ensured the ministry continued. Today Christian Family Ministries thrives with support from church partners and dedicated volunteers.
A significant moment arrived in February 2016. Christian Family Ministries purchased its current home at 7354 Whittaker Rd. Here, its mission remains unchanged. It brings the gospel’s transformative power to Southwest Detroit.
Christian Family Ministries embodies service. They address hunger and thirst. They meet the need for belonging. They validate individuals. They witness Christ’s love and forgiveness. This is shared with all. Fellowship is central to their work. Christians gather for worship and Bible study six days a week. They share meals fostering a strong community.
Compassion drives their actions. They love one another deeply. They act against brokenness and injustice. Their vision is clear. They seek the lost and strengthen the weak. They empower individuals to break free from cycles of brokenness. They believe this happens through Jesus Christ. They operate out of His love. They pray that God uses them to expand His kingdom. They dream of a transformed Southwest Detroit filled with hope.
