Born in Frankfurt am Main Christian Ernst Neeff’s life was a remarkable blend of medicine physics and scientific advancement. His grave a quiet resting place in Frankfurt’s Hauptfriedhof tells only a small part of this extraordinary story. This is the final resting place of a man who significantly shaped the scientific landscape of 19th-century Frankfurt.
Christian Ernst Neeff was more than just a doctor. He was a physician a physicist and a pivotal figure in several prominent Frankfurt institutions. After studying theology in Jena he switched to medicine studying in Marburg Göttingen Würzburg and Erlangen. He earned his doctorate in 1809 and immediately began practicing medicine in Frankfurt. His career took an interesting turn.
In 1812 he became a professor of general and special pathology at the short-lived medical faculty founded under Prince Dalberg. The faculty only lasted a year. This didn’t deter Neeff though. He worked tirelessly at Frankfurt’s military hospitals in Sachsenhausen and on the Sandhof during the turbulent year of 1813. His contributions during wartime demonstrated his commitment to his community.
Neeff’s multifaceted career continued. He was appointed extraordinary physician in 1814 and then Landphysikus in 1818. From 1815 to 1846 he served as a physician at the Senckenberg Bürgerhospital. He even taught botany at the Senckenberg Institute. He wasn’t just a medical professional. Neeff was a pioneer in physics.
A co-founder of the Senckenberg Natural History Society in 1817 and the Physical Society in 1824 Neeff led the Physical Society until his death. His dedication to scientific inquiry was unwavering. From 1820 onwards he pursued his passion for physics delivering well-received lectures especially in electromagnetism. He was ahead of his time.
Neeff’s ingenuity shone through his inventions. He constructed a remarkable “lightning wheel” in 1835. Four years later he unveiled an electromotor. These innovations are a testament to his brilliance. His scientific curiosity extended beyond electromagnetism. He studied meteor showers investigating the relationship between electrical polarity light and heat. His findings were published in the Journal für Chemie und Physik and later in the Annalen der Physik und Chemie.
His legacy extends beyond his achievements. Neeff bequeathed his fortune to the Senckenberg Medical Institute securing its future. A commemorative plaque at the entrance of the former Senckenberg Library in the old university building in Bockenheim serves as a lasting tribute. The Frankfurt Physical Society continues his work. Since 1999 they have awarded the Christian Ernst Neeff Research Prize to young people working on socially relevant projects related to environment and technology. This keeps Neeff’s spirit of innovation and community involvement alive. His impact resonates even today. His contributions remain a source of inspiration and his legacy continues to shape the city of Frankfurt.
