“Saving a seat for you.” That’s the warm invitation Christian Center Assembly of God Church extends to everyone. Christian Center Assembly of God Church began its journey on January 12 1992. It started in Pastor Carl B. Lambert’s living room with only 12 people.
Pastor Lambert served the congregation faithfully. He continued until the Lord called him home in January 2007. In April 2007 Joe R. Mayo became the pastor. God has blessed Christian Center Assembly of God Church since then. New families joined and a new facility was established. There were more opportunities to love the community.

The Assemblies of God movement started in the early 20th century. It began at Charles Parham’s Bible school in Topeka Kansas. Parham taught his students to study Acts Chapter 2. He believed speaking in tongues was the evidence of Spirit baptism. Agnes Ozman spoke in tongues on January 1 1901 after studying the Scriptures. She was baptized with the Holy Ghost. This rediscovery led to converts all over America.
The Azusa Street revival in Los Angeles from 1906 to 1913 greatly boosted Pentecostalism. Christians from many denominations attended. Despite opposition the movement spread. Preachers returned to their communities to hold meetings. The Assemblies of God was chartered in 1913. Pentecostal pioneers such as E.N. Bell and Howard Goss initiated it.
Charles Parham taught that speaking in tongues is the initial evidence of Holy Spirit baptism. He went to Houston and set up a Bible school. William Seymour a black preacher attended the meetings. Seymour was invited to Los Angeles. He preached that speaking in tongues is evidence of baptism but was locked out of the church.
Seymour found an audience at the Edward Lee home. Later integrated congregations prayed for revival at the Asberry home. On April 9 Edward Lee received the Holy Spirit. Bigger crowds gathered at the Asberry’s home. The building at 312 Azusa Street became the new meeting place.
The newspapers mocked Seymour. But Seymour urged people to lift up Jesus. The Azusa Street revival saw thousands come to Christ. The interracial worship was a striking exception to segregation. William H. Durham led thousands into the Pentecostal movement after visiting Azusa Street.
Durham’s theology led to the formation of the Assemblies of God in 1914. The Assemblies of God became the largest Pentecostal denomination in the world. The fires that burned at Azusa Street from 1906 to 1909 are still burning today.
The Assemblies of God was born in revival. Participants spoke in tongues and experienced other supernatural manifestations. The resurgence of the Holy Spirit is traced to Topeka Kansas in 1901. Houston and Los Angeles became sites for revival. This eventually birthed the Assemblies of God in 1914.
Participants were not welcomed back into their former churches. They formed new Pentecostal churches. To counter isolation publications appeared telling of the revival. A 1913 publication called for independent churches to band together.
The first meeting was held in Hot Springs Arkansas in April 1914. Church leaders formed a fellowship of independent churches. This became the General Council of the Assemblies of God.
