Born from a desire for inclusion Christengemeinde Elim stands tall in Hamburg. Its history whispers of a time when those with charismatic experiences found themselves unwelcome in other churches. Established in 1926 it became the seed from which the Elim movement sprouted. This church wasn’t just a building it was a refuge. A haven for those seeking a different kind of faith.

Christengemeinde Elim quickly grew. Within twelve short years 42 congregations bloomed across Germany. Northern Germany Saxony and areas that are now part of Poland saw significant growth. The church’s unique blend of Pentecostal beliefs and practices drew many. It emphasized the power of the Holy Spirit and the importance of practicing spiritual gifts such as prophecy and speaking in tongues.

The church’s story is not without its challenges. In 1938 26 Elim congregations joined the Baptist Union. This wasn’t a simple decision. It happened partly due to pressure from the Nazi regime. After World War II some Elim congregations chose to leave the Baptist Union. They joined the newly formed Bund Freikirchlicher Pfingstgemeinden. Others remained independent.

Today Christengemeinde Elim in Hamburg is a vibrant community. People from over 40 nations gather here. More than 30% of its members have immigrant backgrounds.
