In 1851, a grand edifice arose on Prospect Street in Cambridge. This was no ordinary building. This was the Prospect Congregational Church, now home to Christ the King Presbyterian Church. Christ the King Presbyterian Church found its home here in 1995, breathing new life into these historic walls. The original congregation, known as the First Evangelical Congregational Church in Cambridgeport, was formed back in 1827. Members of Lyman Beecher’s Hanover Street Church in Boston sought a new spiritual home, eventually leading to the construction of this very building. Designed by the architect Alexander Rice Esty, the church was dedicated in 1852 with sermons by Beecher himself and William Augustus Stearns. Can you imagine the echoes of their voices resonating through this sanctuary? The building’s historical significance earned it a place on the National Register of Historic Places in 1982. A merger in 1985 saw the Prospect Congregational Church combine with the North Avenue Congregational Church, becoming the North Prospect Union Church in Medford. This left the Prospect Street building vacant, awaiting its next chapter. Christ the King Presbyterian Church, a church plant founded just a year prior, seized the opportunity in 1995. They purchased the dormant building, bringing with them a renewed sense of purpose and community. Today, Christ the King thrives, holding Sunday services, Sunday school classes, and various ministries. The church was once part of a network connected to Redeemer Presbyterian Church of New York, even housing a Church Planting Center dedicated to establishing new churches throughout New England. This endeavor resulted in new congregations springing up across the region, from Dorchester to Newton and beyond. So, as you stand before Christ the King Presbyterian Church, remember the echoes of history within its walls. From its beginnings as a beacon for a breakaway congregation to its current role as a vibrant Presbyterian community, this building has witnessed a tapestry of faith and resilience.
