From humble beginnings in a small chapel Mass was first celebrated at 735 Pitt Street. This was the start of Christ Our King Catholic Church. It began as a mission of Stella Maris parish back in 1922.
Christ Our King wasn’t always the grand church it is today. Imagine a small chapel bustling with faithful parishioners. This was the beginning of Christ Our King’s journey. In the 1950s Monsignor Laurence McLaughlin built a hall. This hall became a chapel on the current church site. It was named Christ Our King. In 1973 Bishop Ernest Unterkoefler designated Christ Our King a parish. Its official recognition solidified its place in the community.
The current church building however is a testament to growth and devotion. The dedication ceremony took place on Gaudete Sunday in 1979. This marked a significant milestone in Christ Our King’s history. It transformed from a small mission into a thriving parish. This impressive church building can seat 500 people. It’s now home to approximately 2000 families. Think of the countless weddings baptisms and masses that have taken place within its walls.
Four pastors have served Christ Our King since its establishment as a parish. Father Robert J Kelly served from 1973 to 1977. Father Herbert Conner SJ served from 1977 to 1989. Monsignor James Carter served from 1989 to 2017. Father Robert Spencer has served as pastor from 2017 to the present. Their leadership helped to shape the church’s identity. Their dedication guided Christ Our King through various stages of its development.
Today Christ Our King continues to serve its community. The church is a center for spiritual growth and community engagement. It stands as a beacon of faith in Charleston.
