Washed by the Caribbean Sea, the Christ of the Deep holds a story as deep as the waters surrounding it. Here at the Carenage harbor, this bronze statue isn’t just a beautiful piece of art. It’s a symbol of gratitude, resilience, and a reminder of a maritime tragedy that touched the hearts of Grenadians. Christ of the Deep is a replica of Italy’s Christ of the Abyss. It was gifted to Grenada by Costa Line, the owners of the ill-fated Bianca C. The Bianca C, a luxurious Italian cruise ship, met a fiery end in these very waters in 1961. Imagine the scene: the early morning of October 22nd. A devastating explosion rips through the Bianca C’s boiler room. Nearly 700 passengers and crew are thrown into chaos and danger. But amidst the panic, the people of Grenada showed their true colors. Local fishermen, without hesitation, steered their boats towards the burning ship, rescuing survivors from the turbulent waters. The community transformed their homes into shelters, offering comfort and care to the traumatized passengers. They even set up a makeshift hospital to treat the injured. This act of selfless bravery didn’t go unnoticed. Christ of the Deep, installed on the waterfront as a poignant reminder of the Bianca C tragedy, symbolizes the deep connection forged between the Grenadian people and the survivors. It honors the islanders’ courage and hospitality in the face of disaster. The Bianca C, now resting on the seabed near Grand Anse Beach, became the largest shipwreck in the Caribbean, a popular dive site that whispers tales of tragedy and heroism. The Christ of the Deep serves not only as a memorial but as a symbol of hope and the enduring spirit of Grenada.
