“Saints Sinners and Surfers” proclaims a banner. That’s the welcoming message at Christ Lutheran Church in Pacific Beach. This isn’t your grandmother’s Lutheran church. Founded in 1946 it’s embraced a unique identity.
Christ Lutheran Church isn’t just a place of worship. It’s a vibrant community hub in a dynamic neighborhood. Its 750 members are a diverse group. They’re striving to reach out to the college-aged and post-college residents. Many are drawn to surfing and partying not church. The church is working hard to adapt to the neighborhood’s unique character.
The church’s current interim senior pastor Paul Thomton shared challenges and triumphs. He described Pacific Beach as a mission field. Reaching out to young people is a significant focus. Past efforts included music concerts events and the idea of an open gym. A previous pastor’s surfing habits attracted a younger crowd a refreshing approach to traditional ministry.
Inside the church itself is a beautiful sanctuary. White walls meet an arched ceiling. Five stained-glass windows depict scenes from Jesus’ life. Other windows illustrate moments in church history such as Martin Luther posting his 95 Theses. The atmosphere is peaceful yet full of life.
The services themselves are a mix of tradition and modernity. The organist plays Bach. The congregation sings hymns both familiar and uplifting. Pastor Thomton’s sermons are contemporary. He speaks about God’s unconditional love and healing. Communion is offered and all are welcome regardless of background.
After the 9 am service the congregation gathers on a palm-tree-lined patio. They share coffee and juice. They engage in fellowship. Christ Lutheran Church also participates in an interfaith shelter showing its commitment to community service. A weekly liturgy booklet helps to explain the service making it more accessible to newcomers.
Christ Lutheran Church is more than just a building. It’s a community of faith a place of worship and a beacon of hope in Pacific Beach. It’s a place where saints sinners and surfers are all welcomed. It’s a church that is actively engaging with its surroundings. It adapts to meet the needs of its community. It strives to spread the love of God in a unique and modern way.
