Gazing upon Christ-König Church, can you hear the echoes of history whispering through its walls? Christ-König Church stands as a testament to faith and resilience. It serves a community spanning over 30 villages between Lüneburg and the Elbe River. This church, consecrated on August 11, 1963, by Bishop Heinrich Maria Janssen, holds a special significance for those who sought refuge here after World War II. The influx of Catholics from Eastern Germany, particularly Silesia, following the war, necessitated a dedicated place of worship. Initially, services were held in the Adendorf school and even the pastor’s home. The name Christ-König, meaning Christ the King, was chosen by Pastor Gradys. It commemorates his own release from a Soviet POW camp on the Feast of Christ the King in 1949. He arrived at Friedland Camp, a beacon of hope for returning prisoners. The church’s architecture, designed by Karlheinz Bargholz, mirrors the style of St. Marien Church in nearby Lüneburg. Notice the saddle roof crowned with a ridge turret, a simple yet elegant design. Inside, a crucifix dominates the altar area. Below it rests the tabernacle and the Eternal Light. A baptismal font and a statue of Mary, where you can light votive candles, add to the serene atmosphere. Fifteen Stations of the Cross adorn the east wall. A confessional is discreetly nestled within the wall. Look closely for an icon of the Eleusa, a copy of the Mother of God of Vladimir, hanging in a niche. The church grounds also include a community center. It was built in 1978, providing a gathering space for up to 100 people. The center serves as a hub for various activities. It has hosted everything from scout meetings and senior gatherings to ecumenical receptions and celebrations. The Christ-König Church isn’t just a building. It’s a living testament to the power of faith, community, and the enduring human spirit in the face of adversity.
