Whispers of faith echo through time. This is the Christ Christian Home Mission. Right here in Los Angeles this unassuming building holds a rich history. For decades it has been a beacon of hope for many.

In the 1930s a generous donation set the stage. John and Fred Off gifted land to Christ Faith Mission. This act honored their mother Mary Off a friend of Arglee “Mother” Green. Mother Green a remarkable woman ran a mission in downtown Los Angeles. She aided needy women and girls. She acquired the Pisgah Home property around 1927. It was renamed Echo Home. Extensive renovations began immediately. The Mountain Home property donation brought Mother Green here. She established a branch of her downtown ministry. People traveled from across the nation seeking her help.

They also helped create the beautiful Mountain Home buildings. Native rock was used in construction. The Rev H J Smith his wife Sarah and their family arrived in 1950. He became secretary to the board and operations director for Christ Faith Mission. Rev Smith expanded Mother Green’s ministry. He added diversity and compassion.

Camp meetings became a tradition. Large tents housed these gatherings. Music and praise filled the air. Services stretched from dusk till dawn. The power of God was felt by all. These camp meetings continued for many decades. Mother Green eventually passed away. Brother Smith continued her work. His ministries expanded globally. The Herald of Hope and the radio broadcast Hope For Today were known as The Voice of Pisgah. This referred to the Pisgah Home Movement in Pikeville Tennessee.

Viola one of Brother Smith’s daughters married John C Hoover. They moved to Mountain Home managing the retreat. They raised two daughters Lisa and Christy. Viola remains the manager. Lisa serves as a director and Christy is president of the board. Brother Smith passed away in 1994. His family and dedicated individuals continue his legacy. People still come here for peace and tranquility. They worship fast and pray. Church groups hold retreats scheduling their own services and activities. Even during the COVID-19 pandemic the mission adapted following safety guidelines.
