Philadelphia’s Christ Assembly Lutheran Church stands before you. Its story begins not in grand architectural plans but in the turmoil of Liberia’s civil war. The conflict of the 1990s forced many Liberians to seek refuge. Philadelphia became home to a significant Liberian community.

This church isn’t just a building. It’s a testament to resilience and faith. Philadelphia Lutheran Ministries recognized the need for a church among these new Philadelphians. They found Reverend Arthur Zogar a Liberian pastor. They helped him become a part of the Lutheran Church-Missouri Synod. PLM also helped the congregation find a building. That building at 229 North 63rd Street in West Philadelphia became Christ Assembly’s home. A loan from the Lutheran Extension Fund made the purchase possible.

The church thrived. In 2014 it celebrated its 15th anniversary. A decade and a half of worship community and service. Reverend Zogar’s return to Liberia in 2015 marked a transition. Reverend William Boymah stepped up to lead the congregation. He continues to serve Christ Assembly while also running a business. A true testament to dedication.

This isn’t just a story of a church building. It’s about community. It’s about support. It’s about the enduring strength of faith in the face of adversity. Philadelphia Lutheran Ministries continues to support Christ Assembly. They offer pastoral care and guidance. Christ Assembly offers something more. It offers food bank services. It offers the Shared Blessings Community Meal. These programs address local needs directly. They demonstrate the church’s commitment to its neighbors.

Christ Assembly Lutheran Church is more than bricks and mortar. It is a vibrant living community. A center of faith and service in West Philadelphia. Its story is one of resilience hope and the transformative power of community. It’s a powerful example of how faith can create lasting impact in a city. It stands as a beacon of hope for all who enter its doors.
