“A church built in a garage?” you might wonder. Yes, the Chinese Methodist Church here in Brisbane has a truly unique story.
The Chinese Methodist Church, established in 1989, didn’t begin in a grand building like this. Its earliest members, mainly immigrants from Malaysia and Singapore, first gathered in the humble setting of a garage. Can you imagine that? This garage, belonging to Reverend Wong Pin Duan, became a sacred space where the seeds of their faith were sown.
The community blossomed quickly. Soon, they rented spaces in St. Paul’s & St. Peter’s Church and later St. David’s Uniting Church to accommodate their growing numbers. Finally, in 1991, they purchased land in Eight Mile Plains. It was a testament to their dedication and the power of their collective dream.
The church building was completed in 1993, a beacon of their faith and a symbol of their growth. Even after finding their permanent home, the Chinese Methodist Church continued to evolve. They added a Sunday School building in 1999, recognizing the importance of nurturing the next generation in their faith.
Today, the Chinese Methodist Church welcomes over 400 people, a diverse congregation reflecting the multicultural tapestry of Brisbane. It stands as a testament to the spirit of community, resilience, and unwavering faith that built it, brick by brick, prayer by prayer, from a humble garage to this beautiful sanctuary.
