Christianity has become the most practiced religion among the Chinese in America. Most of them are Protestant evangelical congregations. These congregations bring together Chinese from all over the world. Today, there are many Chinese churches across the state of Michigan.
The Chinese Gospel Church is located at 35301 Five Mile Rd in Livonia, MI. The church provides spiritual support. It supports community engagement. It contributes to the well-being and cohesion of local families. With its mission deeply rooted in faith, the Chinese Gospel Church addresses social and cultural needs. It promotes fellowship, worship, and community involvement.
The Metro Detroit Chinese Alliance Church began in 1977. Several couples began to gather at that time. Herman Tang, Carpus Yip and Peter Chu led them. Their wives were also involved. These three men were studying at Trinity Evangelical Divinity School in Deerfield, Illinois. Every weekend they went back and forth. They were part of the pioneering process to plant a new church.
In 1979, Pastor Yuxiang He began to serve as lead pastor. In October of the following year, he returned to Canada. After this, Pastor Xinling Mo helped the ministry. He was a preacher serving with the Windsor Chinese Alliance Church.
In October 1981, Pastor David Chen and his family came from Taiwan. They began serving with the church plant. The church was formally established as Metro Detroit Chinese Alliance Church on April 4, 1982. From 1979 to 1984, it received support from both the Montreal Chinese Alliance Church and the Hebron Church in Hong Kong. After 1984 the church was completely independent. Many church ministries were initiated after the installment of Pastor Chen. These included adult Sunday school, children’s Sunday school, fellowship groups, a church choir, a Chinese school, and a Sunday lunch program.
Due to the increase in the number of people, MDCAC bought its first church in October 1987. It was on Livernois Road in Troy. After the church acquired its own building, the number of people increased more rapidly. It outgrew the capacity of the Livernois Road church building. In June 1991 the sale was completed. MDCAC acquired the church building on John R Road in Madison Heights.
In September 1997, Daniel was officially appointed as senior pastor. Also at this time, Gideon Tsang began serving as youth pastor. In October 1999, MDCAC began working with missionary efforts among Chinese in Germany. At the end of October, an expansion of the church building began. It was projected at 40% of the size of the original facilities.
In May 2002, the church’s English Ministry was officially established. In August, David Chang graduated from Ashland Theological Seminary. He became a full-time evangelist.
In January 2007, the Cantonese Ministry was formally established. In April, the Rochester Hills church plant was officially established. It was named Detroit Chinese Alliance North. Rangfu Chen was installed as pastor.
Combined, the congregations of MDCAC and her daughter churches comprise about 700 adults and children.
