The Beijing Graduate School of CIMT was founded that same year. It began admitting graduate students. The institute was officially renamed the China University of Mining and Technology or CUMT in 1988.
In 1997 the Beijing branch was founded. It admitted undergraduate students. The China University of Mining and Technology at Beijing received recognition as a key university in China in both 1960 and 1978. In 2000 administration was transferred to China’s Ministry of Education.
By 2003 the university was separated into two entities. These were the China University of Mining and Technology CUMT and the China University of Mining and Technology at Beijing CUMTB.
