“Glorious episode” is how some geologists describe a discovery made near here. That discovery changed what we know about China’s glacial past. Today we stand before the China Glacier Museum. This museum is not just a building. It’s a gateway to understanding Earth’s icy history and the impact of glaciers.

The China Glacier Museum is located in the Shijingshan District. More precisely it lies at the southern foot of Cuiwei Mountain. It is about 20 km away from Beijing’s city center. This places us near other cultural sites like Fahai Temple and Tianyi Grave.

Let’s step inside the China Glacier Museum. It’s the only museum in China built next to actual glacial remains. Inside, you will find eleven exhibition halls, spread over two floors.

In 1954, geologist Li Jie found a piece of diabase with glacial striations. This happened north of the Yongding River. Li Siguang later identified it. The striations formed 2 to 3 billion years ago. This discovery was the first of its kind in northern China. It disproved Western geologists who thought China had no major ice age in low-sea areas.

The China Glacier Museum opened to the public in April 1989. In 2009, it reopened after two years of reconstruction. The new China Glacier Museum is much larger. It now covers 4,200 square meters. The glacial striations are now protected indoors.

The China Glacier Museum’s exhibits are very informative. They cover basic knowledge of quaternary glaciers. They also showcase Li Siguang’s New China Quaternary Glacial Theory. You can explore the relationship between climate change and humans. The exhibits include pictures of glacial relics and moraine specimens.

The China Glacier Museum is more than just exhibits. It is a research center. It works with other institutions to study glacial retreat and climate change. The museum promotes conservation. It teaches visitors about the importance of protecting our planet’s ice.

As you wander through the China Glacier Museum, imagine the immense power of glaciers. Think about how they shaped landscapes. Consider their impact on our world. Remember Li Siguang. His work changed how we understand China’s geological history. The China Glacier Museum isn’t just a place to look at old rocks. It’s a place to connect with Earth’s past. It’s a place to think about its future.
