Childs Memorial Baptist Church

Standing in front of Childs Memorial Baptist Church, it’s hard to imagine a church this beautiful once faced a terrible financial crisis. The church was built in 1948 on land donated by Efie Jane Wolfe and George Thomas Childs, parents of seven children, including Wayne, Nora, Wiley, Roy, Aaron, Marvin, and Nell. This was not simply a building; it was the result of a community’s faith and perseverance. You can almost hear the echoes of those early members singing “Amazing Grace,” the church’s first hymn. After the Ebenezer Baptist Church faced financial hardship, a dedicated group of believers, led by Edward M. Baker, split from the original church, holding services in halls and even their own homes. But their determination to worship together was strong, and they eventually managed to pay off the debts of their former church, the former Ebenezer Baptist Church, which had been locked due to unpaid bills. Back then, they had to raise the funds using donations and even using their personal properties as collateral to secure the church. Their sacrifices and hard work brought them back to the same place they had left from, but with a new name: Childs Memorial Baptist Church. The story behind this church is a testament to the power of faith, determination, and community.
