In 1929, a beacon of hope was ignited for Detroit’s most vulnerable children. The Children’s Center opened its doors. Driven by Senator James Couzens’ compassion, The Children’s Center emerged as one of the nation’s pioneering child-guidance clinics. It offered a lifeline to abandoned, abused, and neglected children. The Children’s Center was initially known as The Children’s Fund of Wayne County. It was spearheaded by the visionary Maud E. Watson. Her belief, “No greater obligation rests upon the adults of a civilized nation than the application of their love for their children,” resonated deeply within the institution’s mission. The Children’s Center has continuously evolved to meet the changing needs of the community. In the 1980s, The Children’s Center received recognition for its innovative Specialized Foster Care Program. This program was voted Michigan’s “Innovative Program of the Year.” It was also during this decade that the original Miller Memorial Building was dedicated. The building honored Sarah and Nathan Miller for their contributions. In the 1990s, The Children’s Center was twice recognized as one of Detroit’s “Best Managed Nonprofit Organizations.” The Children’s Center continued its growth and development into the 2000s and 2010s. It broke ground on the Paul D. Marsh Program Center in 2003. The Children’s Center Head Start Academy was established in Northwest Detroit in 2012. Through decades of dedicated service, The Children’s Center has remained steadfast in its mission. The Children’s Center offers critical services to children and families in need. The Children’s Center stands as a testament to the power of compassion and the enduring belief in the potential of every child.
