Have you ever felt the weight of history beneath your feet? We stand before the Chigang Pagoda a majestic structure in Guangzhou’s Haizhu District. This isn’t just any pagoda. It’s a testament to Ming Dynasty ingenuity and the enduring power of Feng Shui.

Built in 1619 during the reign of the Wanli Emperor the Chigang Pagoda was one of three pagodas erected near the Pearl River’s mouth. Legend says these structures were designed to bring good fortune to Guangzhou and the surrounding areas. The Chigang Pagoda is also known as the Red Stone Hill Pagoda a fitting name given its construction from red sandstone.

The pagoda’s octagonal shape is striking. It rises 53.7 meters into the sky. Its base is a wide 12.5 meters in diameter. While it appears to have nine exterior sections the interior reveals a more intricate design with seventeen levels holding the whole structure together. Imagine the skilled artisans who meticulously crafted this architectural marvel.

Sadly the Chigang Pagoda suffered from years of neglect. The elements took their toll. Cracks appeared in its walls. Its foundation began to sink. At one point it even leaned a full 1.05 meters from the vertical. Yet it stood defiant.

Thankfully in 1998 the Guangzhou Municipal Cultural Relics Management stepped in. They invested RMB 1.60 million in its restoration. By mid-1999 the pagoda had been repaired and inspected. Although it is now a protected structure the Chigang Pagoda remains closed to the public.

We can still appreciate its architectural beauty though. We can feel the echoes of centuries past. We can imagine the lives of those who built it those who prayed within its walls. The Chigang Pagoda stands as a silent guardian a symbol of resilience and a captivating piece of Guangzhou’s rich history. You can reach it by rail near Canton Tower Station or Kecun Station on lines 3 and 8 of the Guangzhou Metro. While you may not enter its depths you can certainly feel its presence. Its story is woven into the very fabric of Guangzhou.
