Have you ever wondered what secrets a seemingly ordinary courtyard could hold? This is the Chiesetta della Rotondina. It’s a small church, or “chiesetta” as the Italians call it, hidden in a peaceful corner of Milan, and despite its modest size, it boasts a rich and intriguing history.

Built in the 17th century, the Chiesetta della Rotondina served as a place of worship for the nearby Ospedale Maggiore, a grand hospital, later known as Ca’ Granda, meaning The Big House. Its original purpose was to be a cemetery for the poor. The design is simple, typical of the late Baroque period. However, its true charm lies in its location and surrounding garden. The church is enclosed by a large portico, creating a tranquil, almost mystical atmosphere.

For over a century, the Rotonda, as it’s often called, served as a burial ground for the city’s less fortunate. It was also used for special ceremonies and commemorative events. In 1787, the city decided to relocate all cemeteries outside the city walls for health reasons. That’s when the Rotonda ceased to be used for burials and stood empty for a while. This little church became a victim of changing times and shifting priorities. When Austria took control of Milan, plans were made to convert the Rotonda into a pantheon for Italian heroes, similar to the Pantheon in Paris, but this intriguing idea fell through.

The Rotonda was then repurposed as a hospital for contagious diseases and then as a laundry, reflecting the changing needs of the city. It was in 1939 that the Ospedale Maggiore donated the Rotonda to the city of Milan. The city carefully restored it, transforming it into a green oasis for the community. Today, the Chiesetta della Rotondina is a popular place for people to relax and stroll through the beautiful garden and enjoy the peaceful atmosphere. You can often see locals gathering around the church, enjoying picnics or simply soaking up the peace and quiet, a far cry from its original somber role.
