The name “Chiesa Rossa” might sound strange for a church. Today, we stand before the Church of Santa Maria Annunciata in Chiesa Rossa. This church, completed in 1932, owes its intriguing name to a former neighbor– an old “Santa Maria” church near the Naviglio Pavese canal. This old church was called “Santa Maria ad Fonticulum” but was also known as “Chiesa Rossa”. While the “Chiesa Rossa” no longer stands, the name lives on in this architectural gem designed by Giovanni Muzio. He might not have been the most popular architect of his time. But his work here, with its stark lines and exposed brick, stands as a testament to the rationalist style. However, the real magic happens inside. Step into the Church of Santa Maria Annunciata, and you’ll find yourself bathed in an ethereal glow. This is no ordinary lighting. This is “Untitled”, the final masterpiece of minimalist artist Dan Flavin. Commissioned by the church and brought to life by the Prada Foundation, the installation bathes the space in vibrant hues of green, blue, pink, gold, and even ultraviolet light. Flavin envisioned it as a representation of a day’s passage, from the cool hues of dawn to the warm glow of dusk. Sadly, Flavin passed away before seeing his vision realized. But his legacy lives on in this unique fusion of art and architecture. When you visit the Church of Santa Maria Annunciata, take a moment to appreciate the interplay of light and space. Let the colors wash over you as you reflect on the enduring power of art and faith.
