Isn’t it remarkable how a small community can carry such significant weight? The Chiesa Presbiteriana stands here in Milan. It represents a beacon of Reformation in a land long dominated by Roman Catholicism.

This church is more than just a building. It is a testament to the enduring spirit of those seeking to uphold Reformed Christian values in Italy. Imagine a country steeped in history and art. Yet, it’s spiritually yearning for the light of the Gospel. That was Italy.

In a nation where over 70% of the population identifies as nominally Roman Catholic with little grasp of the Gospel, the Chiesa Presbiteriana offers something different. It stands as a beacon of hope. It offers a return to the roots of Reformation theology. This movement faced fierce opposition centuries ago.

Let’s rewind to the 16th century. The Reformation thrived briefly in Italy during the 1520s and 1530s. The Roman Inquisition crushed it by 1542. For centuries, the country remained largely untouched by Reformed teachings. Today, the Chiesa Presbiteriana and similar churches are working to change that.

Several mission works linked to the North American Presbyterian and Reformed Council are actively planting churches here. Their goal is to faithfully preach the Gospel of Jesus Christ. These churches hope to have a lasting influence. They want to impact the doctrines, worship, and life of Italian Christians.

The work is led by dedicated missionaries. One such figure is Rev. Michael Brown. He is an ordained minister in the United Reformed Churches in North America. He serves as pastor of Chiesa Riformata Filadelfia. It is a small but growing congregation located on the northwest side of Milan.

These missionaries face a daunting task. Italy is a nation of nearly 60 million people with fewer than five established confessional Reformed and Presbyterian churches. Compare that to California. It has a smaller population but over 200 NAPARC churches.

The mission of Chiesa Presbiteriana extends beyond Milan. There are sister churches in Perugia and Lecce. They are all striving to build up congregations through the grace of Jesus Christ. The long-term vision is ambitious. It is to establish a healthy, indigenous denomination of Presbyterian and Reformed churches in Italy: la Chiesa Presbiteriana e Riformata in Italia.

The establishment of the Comunione delle Chiese Presbiteriane e Riformate in Italia marks a significant step forward. This coalition of Presbyterian and Reformed churches held its first in-person meeting in June 2022. They worked towards creating Italy’s first Reformed and Presbyterian denomination.

How can you help this mission? Prayer is paramount. Pray for the bold proclamation of the Gospel. Pray for the spiritual health of the churches in Milan, Perugia, Trasimeno, and Lecce.

Consider learning more about these mission projects. Share the stories of Reformation Italy with others. The Chiesa Presbiteriana in Milan is more than a church. It is a symbol of faith, resilience, and the ongoing work of bringing Reformation back to Italy. It is a reminder that even in the most challenging environments, the light of the Gospel can find a way to shine.
