“A bronze statue of a saint preaching to fish? Quite unusual, wouldn’t you say?” Right here, before the Chiesa parrocchiale di Sant’Antonio di Padova, that’s precisely what you’ll find. This Milanese sanctuary, dedicated to St. Anthony of Padua, has a rich history, intertwined with the Franciscan order. The Chiesa parrocchiale di Sant’Antonio di Padova isn’t just a beautiful building. It’s a testament to faith, growth, and restoration. The story begins in 1872 with a humble hospice and chapel. The Order of Friars Minor, a branch of the Franciscan order, established the Hospice of the Holy Land just outside Porta Tenaglia. This hospice included a small convent and a chapel dedicated to the Immaculate Conception. By 1898, the convent had expanded and become the headquarters for the Friars Minor’s new province. A larger church was needed. Architect Paolo Cesa Bianchi designed the Chiesa parrocchiale di Sant’Antonio di Padova, completed in 1902. Imagine the grand consecration ceremony led by Cardinal Andrea Ferrari, Archbishop of Milan, just before St. Anthony’s feast day. Between 1932 and 1937, the church underwent significant expansion. New naves, side chapels, and that striking bell tower, designed by Ugo Zanchetta, dramatically altered the Chiesa parrocchiale di Sant’Antonio di Padova’s appearance. In 1937, Pope Pius XI elevated the sanctuary to a minor basilica. Later, in 1957, it officially became a parish church under Archbishop Giovanni Battista Montini, the future Pope Paul VI. The Chiesa parrocchiale di Sant’Antonio di Padova continued to evolve. In 1971, architect Giovanni Muzio redesigned the presbytery, including a new high altar and pulpit. He had also designed the convent’s new oratory in 1965. Between 1995 and 2001, extensive restorations breathed new life into the Chiesa parrocchiale di Sant’Antonio di Padova. Both the interior and exterior were meticulously revived, preserving its historical and artistic significance. Now, look closer at the facade. Its neo-Baroque style echoes 18th and 19th-century Milanese architecture. The bronze statue in the square, sculpted by Giuseppe Maretto in 1932, commemorates the 700th anniversary of St. Anthony’s death. The 55-meter bell tower, with its Art Nouveau design, stands proudly beside the Chiesa parrocchiale di Sant’Antonio di Padova. Atop, a 5-meter statue of St. Anthony holding the baby Jesus completes the impressive structure. Stepping inside, the Chiesa parrocchiale di Sant’Antonio di Padova reveals an eclectic interior, blending neoclassical, neo-Renaissance, and neo-Baroque elements. Attilio Andreoli’s frescoes adorn the ceiling of the central nave, depicting scenes from St. Anthony’s life. The Chiesa parrocchiale di Sant’Antonio di Padova stands as a vibrant hub of faith and community in Milan. From its humble beginnings as a hospice to its current grandeur, the church has served as a spiritual haven for generations.
