The history of the Chiesa parrocchiale di Santa Maria del Buon Consiglio is one of resilience. Standing tall amidst the bustling streets of Milan, this church has witnessed both the joy of celebrations and the pain of wartime destruction. Its story, however, is more than just brick and mortar. It is a testament to faith enduring even in the face of adversity. The first parish church in Bovisa, built in 1724, was dedicated to the Santissima Maria Aracoeli. It was demolished in 1960. But the spirit of the community thrived, and a new church, the one we stand before today, was built between 1911 and 1917 in the Gothic style of Lombardy. It was architect Spirito Maria Chiappetta who envisioned this magnificent structure. The church was consecrated in 1917 by Cardinal Andrea Carlo Ferrari. It was a moment of great joy for the parishioners. Despite the challenges of the period, the community was thrilled to have a new place of worship. The church quickly became the spiritual heart of the Bovisa neighborhood, offering solace and support. But in 1942, the church’s serenity was shattered. During World War II, it faced the brutality of bombs. In 1942, on October 24, and again in February 1943, the church suffered severe damage. Yet, even amid devastation, the spirit of faith remained unbroken. Post-war, in 1950, the Grotta della Madonna di Lourdes, a serene sanctuary dedicated to the Virgin Mary, was inaugurated in the church’s courtyard. This was a symbol of hope and renewal for the community, a reflection of their enduring faith. The church was restored and the community rebounded, rebuilding their lives and their beloved place of worship. Today, the Chiesa parrocchiale di Santa Maria del Buon Consiglio stands as a vibrant symbol of the enduring spirit of Bovisa, a testament to the strength of faith in the face of hardship. Its walls hold echoes of a turbulent past but the church continues to be a source of comfort and inspiration for the community.
