The sail-like roof of San Nicolao della Flue. A striking image isn’t it? This unique Milanese church stands as a testament to mid-20th-century design.
San Nicolao della Flue is more than just a place of worship. It’s a striking example of Italian modern architecture. Located in the Forlanini district it’s a beacon in this part of the city. Its construction became necessary with the rapid growth of the Forlanini neighborhood in the 1960s. Interestingly a first design by a Swiss architect never materialized.
Ignazio Gardella and Anna Castelli Ferrieri are the minds behind the church’s final design. Built between 1968 and 1970 it’s a marvel of reinforced concrete. Its distinctive sail-like roof is a defining feature. This roof isn’t just aesthetically pleasing. It also structurally divides the interior into three naves. The central nave is significantly taller creating a dramatic vertical effect.
The light filtering through the slit windows enhances this effect. These windows are not just functional. They also create a sense of awe and reverence. Pino Grioni’s 134 stained-glass windows are another highlight. They were strongly influenced by the first parish priest Don Piero Carnelli a great admirer of Grioni’s art. The stained-glass windows don’t just color the church. They also subtly affect the lighting enhancing its sacred atmosphere. The interplay of light and color within the church is truly captivating.
Beyond the windows ten large panels by Grioni adorn the side walls. Among them the ‘Jerusalem nova’ panel is particularly impressive. It circles a concrete cylinder housing the elevator. It immediately captures the visitor’s attention. It is a truly unique sight.
The church also boasts other artistic treasures. A white marble statue of the Madonna della Confidenza by Vincenzo Gasperetti is near the entrance. A bronze triptych by Lello Scorzelli is on the sacristy wall. Father Costantino Ruggeri designed the tabernacle and baptismal font. Even the organ a Gaetano Callido instrument from Veneto has a history. It found its home here in 1977.
