The Chiesa di San Giorgio al Palazzo’s story begins in 750 AD. Bishop Natalis of Milan erected a church here. He built it upon the ruins of an ancient Roman imperial palace. Diocletian had commissioned this palace. Milan was then the capital of the Western Roman Empire. This is how the Chiesa di San Giorgio al Palazzo got its name.
Over the centuries, the Chiesa di San Giorgio al Palazzo transformed. In the 12th century, a larger church replaced the original. By the 16th century, significant changes began. Side chapels appeared. One such addition was the Chapel of the Passion. Bernardino Luini adorned it with frescoes in 1516.
The 17th century brought Baroque renovations. Francesco Maria Richini redesigned the Chiesa di San Giorgio al Palazzo in 1623. Then, in 1774, Francesco Croce created a new facade. Previously, a simple brick wall stood with three Renaissance portals.
Luigi Cagnola oversaw a complete interior restoration between 1800 and 1821. Finally, in 1899, the bell tower and neoclassical dome were completed. Alfonso Parrocchetti designed them.
The exterior of the Chiesa di San Giorgio al Palazzo features an 18th-century facade. Francesco Croce built it. It is entirely clad in marble. The facade divides into two sections. A decorated cornice with triglyphs separates them. Tuscan columns and pilasters mark the lower section. A portico with a semi-circular pediment sits at the center. Above the portal, a relief depicts the Madonna and Child between two saints. Ionic pilasters decorate the upper section. A rectangular window sits in the center. The facade culminates in a triangular tympanum. It is topped by three bronze statues. The central statue represents San Giorgio. The side statues depict two angels.
The neoclassical dome graces the Chiesa di San Giorgio al Palazzo. Alfonso Parrocchetti designed it. It rises from a drum featuring arched windows and Corinthian columns. A lantern with two tiers of windows crowns the dome.
Inside the Chiesa di San Giorgio al Palazzo, you will find a Latin cross layout with three naves. Luigi Cagnola’s early 19th-century renovations shaped this space. Tuscan pillars support arches that divide the naves. The central nave has two bays with sail vaults. Rectangular windows illuminate each bay. The side naves each have four bays. These are covered with groin vaults.
The Passion Chapel is a highlight. Bernardino Luini’s 1516 cycle of paintings decorates its walls. The paintings depict scenes from Christ’s Passion. These include the Lamentation over the Dead Christ, the Ecce Homo, and the Flagellation.
The Chiesa di San Giorgio al Palazzo also houses two pipe organs. The main organ is located in the counter-facade gallery. Balbiani-Vegezzi Bossi built it in the 1920s. A positive organ sits in the right transept. Flentrop built it in the 1960s and was installed in 2013.
