Did the church inspire an Italian literary giant? Let me tell you. Right before us stands the Chiesa parrocchiale di San Benedetto. This grand parish church, a dream of Saint Luigi Orione, wasn’t just meant to be a place of worship. It was envisioned as a beacon of charity and faith in a rapidly growing Milan. Construction began in 1949. The architect, Mario Baciocchi, considered a “handyman of Don Orione,” designed it in a simple, humble style reminiscent of the Lombard Romanesque tradition. The church officially opened in 1953, blessed by Cardinal Ildefonso Schuster. It was dedicated to Saint Benedict, echoing Don Orione’s devotion to Divine Providence and the Cardinal’s Benedictine roots. Interestingly, the church’s first parish priest, Don Silvio Ferretti, played a unique role in the life of Italian writer Ignazio Silone. Don Orione entrusted the care of the orphaned Silone to Don Ferretti, who ensured he completed his education.
