“Another church?” I hear you ask, but the Chiesa parrocchiale della Sacra Famiglia in Rogoredo is more than just bricks and mortar. This church tells a tale of industrial growth, community spirit, and architectural charm.
Welcome to the Chiesa parrocchiale della Sacra Famiglia. It stands as a testament to Rogoredo’s evolution from a rural area to an industrial hub.
In the early 20th century Rogoredo experienced a surge in population. Factories and a new railway station drew thousands to this once-quiet area. Existing churches were too far to meet the spiritual needs of the growing community. Don Luigi Martinenghi, from San Donato Milanese, recognized this need and championed the construction of a new church.
Cardinal Ferrari also greatly supported Don Luigi Martinenghi. He appointed a commission and initiated fundraising for the project. The foundation stone was laid on November 12, 1905. Architects Oreste Benedetti and Antonio Casati designed the church. They also designed the church of San Pietro in Sala. Chiesa parrocchiale della Sacra Famiglia shares notable similarities with San Pietro in Sala.
The Chiesa parrocchiale della Sacra Famiglia partially opened for worship in 1907. Construction concluded in 1911. The campanile or bell tower was added in 1921.
Initially, the church operated as an archbishop’s delegation from 1911. It became a fully recognized parish on July 1, 1915, by decree of Cardinal Ferrari. The parish encompassed territory from San Donato Milanese. It also included parts of Chiaravalle and the Milanese parishes of San Luigi, Santa Maria del Suffragio, and San Lorenzo in Monluè.
In 1923 Chiaravalle merged with Milan. The Chiesa parrocchiale della Sacra Famiglia gained the title of prepositural church. Cardinal Tosi decreed this on January 12, 1923. However, it remained under the vicariate of San Donato until 1930. After that, it became part of Milan’s Porta Romana sector. Now, it belongs to the Vigentino deanery.
Cardinal Schuster consecrated the Chiesa parrocchiale della Sacra Famiglia on December 13, 1931.
The church showcases an eclectic style. Its brick facade is divided into three parts. Four pinnacles top the facade. A trifora sits above the main portal. It is enclosed by a round arch.
Inside, the church features a three-nave layout. A polygonal apse completes the structure.
The Chiesa parrocchiale della Sacra Famiglia underwent recent renovations. The artificial stone elements had deteriorated. Cracks threatened to send pieces falling onto passersby. The restoration has revived the church. It now looks as it did a century ago.
The interior also benefited from a full restoration some time ago. The early 20th-century decorations are now prominently displayed on every surface.
Although some consider its architecture unremarkable it exudes a solemn and dignified presence. The Chiesa parrocchiale della Sacra Famiglia stands as a proud landmark in Rogoredo.
Ironically, the church’s forecourt is now a parking lot. Imagine a more fitting entrance, perhaps a semi-pedestrian area with trees. That would be much better. Still, the Chiesa parrocchiale della Sacra Famiglia remains a symbol of faith. It is a testament to the enduring spirit of Rogoredo.
