Peel back the layers of Milan’s history and you find a tale of a church. The Chiesa del Gesù. It stood where Via Gesù is now.

Let’s journey back to 1559. A group of Franciscan nuns sought a new home. Their old monastery in Via Andegari was too small. Giovanni Cubizzolo sold them land covered in gardens. Here the Chiesa del Gesù and its monastery were built.

Imagine the nuns. They sought a peaceful place for worship. Their growing numbers demanded more space. The Chiesa del Gesù became their sanctuary. It served the nuns for over two centuries.

The Chiesa del Gesù had a simple design. It had a single nave. Arches marked with Jesus’s name decorated the space. Three altars adorned the church. The main altar was made of carved wood.

Serviliano Latuada described the other two altars. They featured various images. One was the birth of Christ. The other was the Assumption of the Virgin Mary. Angels surrounded her. The artist remained unknown. Yet the paintings had an elegant touch.

But the story of the Chiesa del Gesù took an unexpected turn. In 1782, the church and monastery were demolished. This occurred due to the Josephine suppressions. Emperor Joseph II closed many religious institutions. The Chiesa del Gesù was a casualty of these reforms.

Now nothing remains of the Chiesa del Gesù. It is just a memory. But its history lives on in old texts and maps.

Today when you walk along Via Gesù remember the church. Remember the nuns who once prayed there. Think about the art that adorned its walls. The Chiesa del Gesù may be gone. But its story adds depth to Milan’s rich past.
