Gazing upon Chiesa di Sant’Enrico, one might sense a quiet strength emanating from its concrete walls. Chiesa di Sant’Enrico stands as a unique blend of modern design and historical significance in San Donato Milanese, Italy, on the edge of the Metanopoli settlement. Originally envisioned by Enrico Mattei, the president of ENI (Ente Nazionale Idrocarburi), the church was meant to serve the newer residents of Metanopoli, further away from the existing Santa Barbara church. Tragically, Mattei died unexpectedly in 1962. To honor his memory, the church was dedicated to Saint Henry the Confessor, and the name Chiesa di Sant’Enrico became a tribute to the visionary leader. The renowned architect Ignazio Gardella designed Chiesa di Sant’Enrico, completing the plans in 1963. Construction began the following year and concluded in 1965. The church was officially designated a parish in 1966. Chiesa di Sant’Enrico occupies a spacious open area. Due to the unrealized plans for a surrounding residential quarter, the land retains its original rural character, giving the church a unique setting. Gardella chose a distinct “Lucchese cross” layout for the church’s design. The orthogonal walls diverge and then converge towards the presbytery, creating a dynamic visual flow. The exposed reinforced concrete walls are pierced by two horizontal slits. One is at eye level, and the other sits just below the roofline. This design element allows focused streams of light to penetrate the solid concrete, creating a captivating interplay of light and shadow within the sanctuary. The roof, a subtle gable form, is clad with laminated wood on the interior, adding warmth to the stark concrete. Chiesa di Sant’Enrico is more than just a building. It’s a testament to a leader’s vision and an architect’s skill. The church stands as a quiet tribute to Enrico Mattei, a unique landmark in the heart of San Donato Milanese.
