Here stands the Chiesa di Sant’Elena. Its story began in a time of growth for Milan.
The Chiesa di Sant’Elena’s construction took place from 1936 to 1940. Architects Michele Marelli and Ernesto Saliva designed it. This construction coincided with the district’s separation from the Trenno parish. The Chiesa di Sant’Elena was to become the heart of this new community.
Imagine the inauguration. Queen Elena and Cardinal Alfredo Ildefonso Schuster attended the ceremony on June 17 1939. A week later the church was consecrated marking its official opening.
The church officially became a parish on October 15 1942. Cardinal Schuster decreed its creation. The territory was taken from the parish of Trenno to form this new parish around the Chiesa di Sant’Elena.
Notice the traditional style of the Chiesa di Sant’Elena. Its exterior uses exposed brickwork. The church’s design is based on a square module measuring 12 meters per side. This module determines the building’s dimensions. The width and height both reach 24 meters. The length extends to 60 meters.
Consider the facade. It forms a perfect square divided into three sections. The central section projects slightly. It is twice as wide as the side sections. A tympanum crowns the central section. A deep and tall arch marks the entrance. Three pointed arch windows adorn the upper section. They conceal the bell chambers behind them.
Step inside the Chiesa di Sant’Elena. Three vaulted bays define the interior space. Reinforced concrete walls separate them. Each wall features six arches supporting the vaults. Light streams through lateral windows high above. These windows correspond to each bay. The semicircular apse receives light from a series of slits.
Look down at the floor. Verona and Chiampo marble create a beautiful surface. The high altar is made of Angera stone. This stone adds a sense of solidity and importance to the altar.
Interestingly the original design included a separate bell tower. This campanile was never built. Imagine how it would have altered the church’s appearance.
The Chiesa di Sant’Elena stands as a testament to faith and community. It represents a significant chapter in the history of Quarto Cagnino.
