“Did you know this area once echoed with chants from a now-vanished church?” That’s right. We are standing where the Chiesa di Sant’Anna once stood. It was a significant religious site in Milan.

Let’s journey back to when the Chiesa di Sant’Anna thrived. The church’s history dates back to 1285. Back then it stood near the Sforza Castle. Imagine a procession carrying the Carroccio. It passed by the Chiesa di Sant’Anna before a war. A member of the Castiglione family led the charge.

However, Duke Francesco Sforza had other plans. He wanted to expand the castle’s fortifications. Sadly, this meant demolishing the original Chiesa di Sant’Anna. The demolition was a big change for the city.

Initially, cloistered nuns occupied the church. Later in 1670, the Theatines moved in. They petitioned Pope Clement X for permission. The Pope agreed.

The Chiesa di Sant’Anna had a single nave. Chapels lined its sides. A wooden ceiling covered the space. It also featured four organ doors. Giovan Battista Discepoli painted them. They depicted Sant’Anna herself. Also featured were Our Lady with Baby Jesus, Saint Augustine and Saint Jerome.

Unfortunately, the Chiesa di Sant’Anna was suppressed and demolished. This happened in the early 19th century. It was part of urban transformations. Corso Garibaldi replaced the church.

Though gone, the Chiesa di Sant’Anna is not forgotten. Its story remains part of Milan’s history. The church is remembered through historical records and maps. These show its location and importance. Today nothing marks the spot physically. Yet its memory persists. The story of Sant’Anna remains woven into Milan’s past.
