“Here lies Beatrix, the shining jewel of the Rusca family”. These words are etched in stone within the Chiesa di Sant’Angelo. They tell a story of faith and family. We are standing before a church steeped in history. It’s a history that intertwines with Milan’s own evolution.

The Chiesa di Sant’Angelo is more than just a religious building. It is a testament to the city’s artistic and cultural heritage. Its story began in the mid-16th century. Ferrante Gonzaga, a Spanish general and Governor of Milan, ordered its construction. This replaced a former church destroyed to make way for new city walls.

Domenico Giunti designed the Chiesa di Sant’Angelo. The bell tower was added in 1607. The facade wasn’t completed until 1630. It showcases a late-Mannerist or early-Baroque style. Unlike many Milanese churches, it avoided 19th-century “neo-medieval” renovations. This makes it a unique architectural gem.

Inside the Chiesa di Sant’Angelo, a single nave extends before you. Side chapels line the walls. A barrel vault arches overhead. A transept crosses the nave. It leads to a deep presbytery.

Look around at the artworks. Gaudenzio Ferrari, Antonio Campi, and Morazzone are among the masters represented. Stefano Maria Legnani’s “Incoronation of Mary” adorns the triumphal arch. The radiant sun symbol with the monogram IHS appears often. This is a Franciscan symbol popularized by St. Bernardino of Siena.

Notice the tomb in the transept. This is the final resting place of Blessed Beatrice Casati. She was the wife and widow of Francino Rusca, Earl of Locarno. Beatrice raised four children. Her daughter erected this monument in her memory. Beatrice was a devout member of the Franciscan order. Her epitaph speaks of her chastity and devotion.

The nineteen chapels belonged to noble families and corporations of Milan. They commissioned decorations over centuries. These span from the sixteenth to the twentieth centuries. The chapels reflect the changing artistic tastes of Milan.

The Chiesa di Sant’Angelo stands apart from typical tourist routes. Its location near the Turati underground station offers a quiet escape. The adjacent square provides a peaceful setting.

Consider the funerals held here. In 2016, the Countess and fashion designer Marta Marzotto was honored here. The Chiesa di Sant’Angelo has been a place of both sorrow and celebration.

The Chiesa di Sant’Angelo is a living testament to Milan’s past. It is a place where art, faith, and history converge. As you leave this sacred space, remember Beatrice Casati. Remember the artists. Remember the families who shaped this beautiful church. They created a lasting legacy of faith and art.
