The current structure is a stunning example of early Lombard Baroque architecture. Its construction began in 1601 under the direction of Lorenzo Binago. Francesco Maria Richini also contributed significantly to its design. The earlier church was demolished to make way for this grander structure along with the nearby San Pancrazio. Cardinal Federico Borromeo laid the first stone on March 30 1602 a significant moment for Milan’s religious landscape.

Initially the church featured a central dome. This unfortunately developed deep cracks by 1627 and was subsequently demolished. Fabio Mangone an architect was consulted. Richini reworked the dome incorporating Mangone’s suggestions. This redesigned dome stands as an engineering marvel of its time.
