A whisper of history brushes your ear. You stand before the Chiesa di Santa Maria delle Grazie al Naviglio. This isn’t just any church. It’s a testament to faith perseverance and a touch of Roman grandeur.

The Chiesa di Santa Maria delle Grazie al Naviglio boasts a captivating history. A chapel dedicated to Our Lady of Grace existed here as early as the 16th century. Its miraculous Madonna image drew worshippers. This original chapel was replaced by a larger Baroque church. Sadly it suffered a devastating fire in 1719. Despite the setback it was restored and elevated to parish status in 1849.

By the late 19th century the church was too small. The growing community needed more space. Milanese architect Gaetano Moretti proposed a design. His vision was a three-aisled Liberty-style church. It would feature a tall bell tower and a grand facade. The final design however came from Cesare Nava in 1900. His design a blend of neo-Romanesque and neo-Gothic elements would define the Chiesa di Santa Maria delle Grazie al Naviglio for generations to come.

Construction began in 1901. The apse and transept were built first. The old Baroque church was finally demolished in 1908. The new Chiesa di Santa Maria delle Grazie al Naviglio was consecrated in 1909. The facade though remained incomplete.

The unfinished facade is part of the church’s charm. Its rough brickwork hints at the original plans. The plans included three arched portals. Each would have been topped by a polyfora. Gables and statues would have crowned the structure. A central spire would have held a statue of the Madonna. Today only the octagonal tiburio and the bell tower stand complete. The bell tower 59 meters high houses five bells. Three are from the original Baroque church. Two larger bells were added in 1950 after wartime requisition.

Step inside. The interior is bright and spacious. It features a Latin cross plan with three naves. Notice the Corinthian marble columns separating the central nave from the side aisles. These are not merely decorative. Four of them are a curious link to Rome. They were salvaged from the portico of the Basilica of San Paolo fuori le Mura. These columns travelled a remarkable journey arriving by barge along the Naviglio Grande. Their story adds another dimension to the rich history of the Chiesa di Santa Maria delle Grazie al Naviglio.

The Chiesa di Santa Maria delle Grazie al Naviglio stands as a powerful symbol of faith community and resilience. Its unfinished exterior and the unexpected provenance of its columns make it a truly unique and captivating place. So take a moment soak in the atmosphere. Remember this special place and its enduring story.
