“What if these walls could talk?” I often wonder while gazing at the Chiesa di San Zenone Vescovo e Martire. This church is not just a building. It is a repository of faith and history.

The story of the Chiesa di San Zenone Vescovo e Martire in San Zenone degli Ezzelini begins long ago. Its origins are deeply rooted in the local community. The parish is dedicated to Saint Zenone. He was a bishop and martyr.

The construction of a new church was proposed in 1765. The intention was to better serve the spiritual needs of the growing population. However, it wasn’t until 1855 that the project gained real momentum. The community faced financial challenges. But their determination helped them overcome these difficulties.

The Di Rovero family donated the land. Bishop’s approval arrived on November 1, 1860. This cleared the way for construction. Two designs were considered. Andrea Favero’s design was deemed too expensive. Eventually, engineer Francesco Pellizzari’s plan was approved on September 1, 1862.

The local people transported building materials. They carried them to the construction site. The first stone was laid on February 2, 1860. This date marked the anniversary of Don Luigi Sforza’s ordination.

Even Emperor Ferdinand of Austria contributed. He granted 400 silver florins to the project. After ten years of effort the Chiesa di San Zenone Vescovo e Martire was nearing completion. The issue of a residence for the parish priest arose.

Don Sforza secured the necessary permissions from Rome in 1872. By the end of 1870 the church was roofed and ready for worship. Don Sforza’s joy was immense. The dedication ceremony was set for August 13, 1871. Sadly, Don Sforza died shortly after. Don Antonio Bianchetto succeeded him on September 7, 1873.

Noè Bordignon decorated the interior from 1874 to 1882. Bordignon had painted the ceiling earlier in 1869-1870. Monsignor Bianchetto worked to build the bell tower. He used his family fortune for the church. He bought confessionals, tribunes and choir lofts.

Monsignor Vitale Gallina converted a sacristy into an oratory. He also commissioned the main altar. The Cavallin brothers of Pove completed it in 1912.

Bordignon’s frescoes adorn the Chiesa di San Zenone Vescovo e Martire. They depict scenes such as the imprisonment of Beato Giordano Forzatè and the Assumption of Mary. The Last Judgment is featured on the apse. The frescoes reflect religious sentiment. They are executed with robust technique. The Carità is particularly notable. It conveys a sense of maternal affection.

Today the Chiesa di San Zenone Vescovo e Martire stands as a symbol of faith. It represents community spirit. It shows artistic achievement. It reminds us of the enduring power of collective effort. Every stone and fresco echoes the stories of those who built it. It makes this church a treasure for generations.
