The church faced a terrifying moment in 2015 when a fire erupted in the sacristy. Around fifty parishioners were inside when the fire started, likely due to an electrical short. Everyone evacuated safely, though the fire damaged the sacristy’s walls and furniture. The incident underscored the church’s importance as a community hub, drawing the attention and concern of locals and authorities alike. Today, the Chiesa di San Tommaso d’Aquino continues to thrive, serving as a vital center for various groups. These include the Ministranti, the Eucharistic Ministers, Catholic Action, the Renewal of the Spirit, the Choir, the Missionary group, and the Padre Pio Prayer group. The church also hosts the Palermo 13 Scout group, named after the beloved Padre Pino Puglisi, and the MASCI Community of Palermo 1. Beyond spiritual guidance, the Chiesa di San Tommaso d’Aquino offers a range of social services. This includes a parish listening center and a vibrant Oratorio. The church is nestled within a network of other institutions. These include the Salesian “Gesù Adolescente” Aggregation Center and Vocational Training Center, the G.A. De Cosmi High School, and the Enrico Medi State Higher Education Institute. The Chiesa di San Tommaso d’Aquino isn’t just a place of worship.
