Could a humble village church in Lombardy ever become a pilgrimage site? You might be surprised to learn that the Chiesa di San Macario right before us holds that very distinction. Originally a modest chapel serving the farming community of Cascina del Manzo, the Chiesa di San Macario rose to prominence in the 17th century. A twist of fate brought the relics of Saint Macario, a Roman soldier martyred in the 3rd century, to this unassuming church. The arrival of the relics transformed the Chiesa di San Macario into a beacon of faith for pilgrims from all over Lombardy and beyond. The faithful flocked here, seeking the saint’s intercession for healing and blessings. The church underwent several expansions to accommodate the growing crowds. It expanded in 1651, again between 1830 and 1832, and finally, in a significant renovation in 1902 to create the beautiful cruciform structure we see today. The Chiesa di San Macario houses a rich collection of art and artifacts. One of the most striking features is the 18th-century ebony urn adorned with silver, containing the relics of Saint Macario. It’s a testament to the enduring power of faith and the legacy of a humble soldier who became a venerated saint.
