“Do you know why this church bears the name of San Luigi Orione?” I ask, gesturing towards the Chiesa di San Luigi Orione. It is a story of dedication and divine providence.

The Chiesa di San Luigi Orione stands as a testament to a remarkable man. Luigi Orione dedicated his life to serving others. Born in Pontecurone in 1872, he experienced poverty firsthand. He worked alongside his father as a street paver.

Orione’s early life was marked by faith. He joined the Salesian Oratory in Turin and became a priest in 1895. His mission was clear: to aid the poor and educate the youth. He founded the Little Work of Divine Providence. This organization aided orphans and those in need.

San Luigi Orione responded swiftly to natural disasters. After the devastating Messina earthquake of 1908, he rushed to assist. He also helped victims of the Marsica earthquake in 1915. His compassion knew no bounds.

His work extended beyond Italy. San Luigi Orione sent missionaries to Brazil in 1913. He later expanded his efforts to Palestine and other countries. He established houses and schools to spread faith and aid the vulnerable.

Orione’s most cherished work was the “Piccolo Cottolengo.” This institution cared for the most impoverished and unfortunate. His dedication earned him recognition. Pope Pius XII called him an “apostle of charity.”

San Luigi Orione’s legacy continues through his religious congregations. The Sons of Divine Providence and the Little Missionary Sisters of Charity carry on his work. He was beatified in 1980 by Pope John Paul II. In 2004, he was canonized as a saint.

A miracle led to his beatification. A young man, Giorgio Vincenzo Passamonti, recovered from terminal meningitis. Doctors declared it scientifically unexplainable. They attributed it to Orione’s intercession.

Another miracle secured his canonization. Pietro Penacca recovered from lung cancer. Doctors deemed his recovery inexplicable. The Church recognized it as a miracle through Orione’s intervention.

San Luigi Orione died in 1940. He left behind a legacy of compassion and service. His life inspires us to help those in need. Remember San Luigi Orione’s example as we reflect on the Chiesa di San Luigi Orione. This church stands as a beacon of hope. It is a testament to his enduring spirit of charity and love.
