Here at the Quattro Canti stands the Chiesa di San Giuseppe dei Teatini. It is an outstanding example of Sicilian Baroque architecture in Palermo. The church’s story began in 1612. The Neapolitan Theatine architect Pietro Caracciolo initiated the project. He was later joined by Giacomo Besio.

San Giuseppe dei Teatini is more than just a church. It represents a significant period of architectural and urban renewal in Palermo. New religious orders played a decisive role at that time. The Theatines were one such order. Gaetano Thiene and Gian Pietro Carafa founded them in 1524. The Theatines settled in Palermo in the 17th century. The nobility granted them protection and favors.

Look at the main facade of San Giuseppe dei Teatini. It faces Via Vittorio Emanuele. This is the oldest street in the city. The facade has a simple and severe aspect. This is typical of the neoclassical style. Notice the two pilasters with Corinthian capitals. They frame the facade. A triangular marble tympanum surmounts the architrave. The portal features coupled columns on high plinths. These support the entablature. An eighteenth-century statue of San Giuseppe resides inside a niche above the portal. Baldassarre Pampillonia sculpted it.

Now, turn your gaze towards Piazza Pretoria. The other facade of San Giuseppe dei Teatini is divided by Corinthian pilasters. Large windows separate them. At the top, a long balustrade features columns with lanterns. These illuminate the side aisles. The Baroque dome is covered with blue and yellow majolica. Giuseppe Mariani designed this striking feature. The bell tower, designed by Paolo Amato, remains incomplete.

Step inside San Giuseppe dei Teatini. The interior is richly decorated. A Latin cross plan with three naves defines the space. Many artists contributed to the church’s beauty. Sculptors such as Andrea Palma and Giuseppe Musso added their talents. Painters like Filippo Tancredi and Guglielmo Borremans contributed frescoes.

Marvel at the frescoes on the ceilings. Filippo Tancredi depicted episodes from the life of St Cajetan. Giuseppe Velasquez and Vincenzo Manno created the figures of the Apostles. Guglielmo Borremans painted the dome with “The Triumph of St. Andrea d’Avellino”. The two marble stoups are supported by stucco angels. Ignazio Marabitti and Filippo Siragusa created them.

A monumental organ is still preserved inside San Giuseppe dei Teatini. The sculpture of the Madonna dell’Oreto is from the school of Gagini. It stands at the entrance to the nave. Corso and Musso decorated the nave with stucco work. The paintings depict the life of Gaetano da Thiene. They also show the twelve Apostles.

Descend a marble staircase inside San Giuseppe dei Teatini. This leads to an underground church. It is dedicated to the Madonna of Providence. A spring of water flows here. Devotees have long believed in its miraculous powers. Today, the water is channeled into the courtyard.

San Giuseppe dei Teatini stands as a testament to Palermo’s rich history. It showcases the artistic and religious fervor of the 17th century. Its stunning architecture and intricate decorations leave a lasting impression. This church is a true gem of Sicilian Baroque art.
