Once upon a time, a dove took flight. Not just any dove, but a little dove. In Irish, that’s Colm án. This little dove became Saint Columbanus. Now we stand before the Chiesa di San Colombano in Milan. It is a place echoing with tales of devotion. This church carries the name of an Irish monk. He left an indelible mark on Europe.

Columbanus was born in Ireland around 543. He was well-educated in scripture. He traveled across Europe. He established monasteries. His journey eventually led him to Italy. King Agilulf of the Lombards welcomed him to Milan. The king granted Columbanus land in Bobbio. There, he founded a new monastery in 614.

But let’s not get ahead of ourselves. Columbanus’s story began long before Milan. Imagine a young man leaving Ireland with twelve companions. They sought to spread Celtic monastic traditions. They landed in France. Columbanus founded monasteries. These included Annegray, Fontaines and Luxeuil. His strict rules and ascetic lifestyle drew followers.

However, his adherence to Celtic Christian traditions caused friction. He argued with Frankish bishops. The dispute centered on the correct date for Easter. Columbanus appealed to the Pope. He defended his traditions. His unwavering stance demonstrated his commitment.

His travels took him through Germany and Switzerland. Finally, he arrived in Milan. King Agilulf recognized his wisdom. He saw Columbanus as a valuable asset. The king wanted Columbanus to engage with the Pope. This would legitimize the Lombard kingdom. In return, Columbanus received land in Bobbio. This marked a new chapter.

Arriving in Bobbio in 614 Columbanus restored the ancient church of San Pietro. He established an Irish-style monastery. Simple cells of wood and straw housed monks. A chapel served the faithful.

Columbanus died in Bobbio in 615. He was 73 years old. His tomb rests in the abbey’s crypt today. Saint Columbanus’s influence extended far beyond his lifetime. His monasteries became centers of learning. They preserved culture during times of upheaval. The Rule of Saint Columbanus shaped monastic life for centuries. It emphasized obedience, silence, and poverty.

Consider this: Columbanus wrote to Pope Boniface IV. He addressed the controversy over the Three Chapters. He apologized for a foolish Scot writing for a Lombard king. His letters showed respect for the Holy See. He also defended his Irish identity.

The Camino di San Colombano traces his path. Pilgrims walk from Milan to Bobbio. They seek to connect with his legacy. They get their credentials stamped. Upon reaching his tomb, they receive a Testimonium. It certifies their pilgrimage.

Today, the Chiesa di San Colombano stands as a reminder. It reminds us of the Irish monk who shaped early Europe. His journey from Ireland to Italy symbolizes faith and perseverance. Remember Columbanus. Remember his little dove spirit. Remember the lasting impact of one man’s devotion.
