“A church with two names?” someone whispered, their voice barely audible above the city’s hum. Right here, before the unassuming facade of the Chiesa della Santissima Trinità e di San Bassiano Vescovo, lies a tale of two churches, intertwined by history and circumstance. Don’t let the simplicity fool you. The Chiesa della Santissima Trinità e di San Bassiano Vescovo holds within its walls centuries of stories. This sacred space began its journey as two separate entities: the churches of San Bassiano and Santissima Trinità. Our journey begins in the 12th century, when both churches were already gracing Gradella with their presence. They coexisted peacefully, their bells echoing through the centuries. But fate, it seems, had other plans. By 1499, San Bassiano Church was elevated to the status of a parish. However, time, as it often does, took its toll on San Bassiano, leaving it in a sorry state. Then, in 1519, a decision was made. The Santissima Trinità, perhaps in better condition, was chosen as the seat of the parish. The two churches were merged, their identities intertwined forever under the name Chiesa della Santissima Trinità e di San Bassiano Vescovo. This union, however, was more than just a practical solution to a crumbling edifice. It symbolized a coming together, a blending of faith and history under one roof.
