“Did you know that the Chiesa del Corneanello has witnessed centuries of change? It stands as a testament to faith and resilience near Rivolta d’Adda. This small church whispers stories of farmers, pilgrims, and a landscape transformed by time.

The Chiesa del Corneanello is dedicated to Santa Maria del Corniano. You might also hear it called Santa Maria del Corgnano. It sits about four kilometers northeast of Rivolta d’Adda. This places it along the old road to Casirate d’Adda. The church is near the border with Arzago’s municipality.

Its location is significant. The Corneana and Corneanello farmhouses surround it. These names come from ‘Curtinianum’. This name was documented as far back as 745. Close by, since at least 1140, stood a fortification. Today, only a wall north of the Chiesa del Corneanello remains. Imagine knights and villagers seeking shelter here centuries ago.

Records show a church dedicated to Santa Maria existed here in 1144. Back then, it belonged to the Saints Maria and Sigismondo of Rivolta d’Adda. This suggests a long history of religious importance in the area.

The building we see now likely dates to the early 1600s. However, older walls remain. Frescoes from the 1400s and 1500s are visible on the north side. These paintings offer glimpses into the artistic styles of those times. A portico stands against the north wall. The custodian’s house is attached to the west side of the Chiesa del Corneanello.

Recently, the Chiesa del Corneanello has been cleaned and restored. Volunteers from Pastoralismo Alpino and the Pro loco joined forces. They helped the women who regularly care for this sacred place. This effort prepared the Chiesa del Corneanello for the Transumanza dei Bergamini. This event celebrates the seasonal movement of livestock.

The Transumanza is more than just a journey. It connects large towns and small villages. These communities maintain their rural character. It’s a celebration of Lombardy’s rural traditions. It highlights the region’s landscapes, art, and natural elements. Imagine the slow procession of cows passing by. The air fills with the scent of hay and the sounds of traditional music.

The Chiesa del Corneanello plays a vital role in this tradition. It welcomes the travelers. It offers a place for reflection and rest. The church embodies the spirit of the countryside. It reminds us of the deep connection between people, land, and faith.

So as you stand before the Chiesa del Corneanello remember its long history. Think of the people who have prayed within its walls. Consider the traditions it continues to support. This small church is a treasure. It reflects the enduring spirit of Rivolta d’Adda and its surrounding lands.”
