Chiba University, a sprawling academic hub, has a fascinating history. Right before us stands the Chiba University South-gate. This gate represents more than just an entrance. It symbolizes a journey into knowledge and discovery that began nearly 150 years ago with the Chiba Normal School and Chiba Public Hospital. These institutions laid the groundwork for what would become one of Japan’s largest and most prestigious universities. In 1949, Chiba University officially emerged, uniting five faculties under a shared mission: “ad altiora semper” – always toward the higher. The South-gate is a testament to this pursuit of excellence. Chiba University has continuously adapted to the changing times. In 1998, it pioneered an early enrollment program for high school students. It also established Japan’s first national College of Liberal Arts and Sciences. Today, Chiba University boasts ten undergraduate schools and seventeen graduate schools. It’s home to over 10,000 undergraduates and over 3,000 postgraduates.
