“Ever pondered how Chiba Institute of Technology came to be?” I ask, gesturing towards the campus. It is more than just a university. It’s a testament to Japan’s drive for technological advancement.
Chiba Institute of Technology began its journey in 1942. It was first known as Kōa Institute of Technology. Kōa means “Asia wakes up”. The Japanese government granted permission for its establishment on December 7, 1941. That was December 8, Asia time.
Prince Naruhiko Higashikuni founded the institute. Osami Nagano, Kuniyoshi Obara, and other prominent figures joined him. These founders envisioned an institution contributing to world culture. They also wanted to spread engineering education throughout Asia.
The original plan positioned Chiba Institute of Technology as a central educational hub. It would serve the Greater East Asia Co-Prosperity Sphere. During World War II, professors even contributed to the development of the Nakajima Kikka.
The university received support from the University of Tokyo. Tohoku University and the Tokyo Institute of Technology also helped. These institutions aimed to cultivate engineers who could lead the nation. The curriculum included industrial engineering. It also featured materials management courses. Aeronautical and mechanical engineering were also key subjects.
Initially located in Machida, Tokyo, the institute moved several times. In 1946, it relocated to Kimitsu, Chiba. That’s when it adopted the name Chiba Institute of Technology. Finally, in 1950, it settled in its current location.
Chiba Institute of Technology stands out for its educational philosophy. Unlike many universities rooted in European traditions, CIT embraces Asian philosophy. It emphasizes liberalism and respects individuality. This approach aligns with Kitaro Nishida’s philosophy.
Today, Chiba Institute of Technology has three campuses. The Tsudanuma and Shin-Narashino Campuses are in Narashino. The Tokyo Skytree Town Campus is in the capital.
The Future Robotics Technology Center is a notable research center. It develops cutting-edge robot technology. The Planetary Exploration Research Center researches the origins of life.
CIT’s alumni have made significant contributions. Masayuki Uemura designed the Nintendo Entertainment System. Kazuki Akane is a renowned anime director.
