Contemplating a journey of knowledge? Then you’re in the right spot. This is Chiang Mai University. Founded in 1964, Chiang Mai University was the first higher education institution in northern Thailand. It was also the first provincial university in the country.

Chiang Mai University is a national public research university. It has a strong focus on engineering and science. Agriculture and medicine are also key areas of study here. The university offers programs for undergraduates and graduates. Professional and continuing education are available too.

The main campus of Chiang Mai University sits between central Chiang Mai and Doi Suthep. This location places it in the heart of Chiang Mai province. Chiang Mai University has four campuses. Three are in Chiang Mai. One is in Lamphun. Together, they cover about 3,490 acres. The main campus is known as Suan Sak. It is also called Cherng Doi. It lies about five kilometers west of the city center. The campus sits against Doi Suthep. It occupies a 725-acre site. Three sides are bounded by main shopping streets. The fourth side borders the Chiang Mai Zoo.

Suan Sak campus includes the university’s administrative center. You will also find the science and engineering faculties here. Humanities and social science departments are here too. Political science, public administration, and law are all taught at the main campus. The graduate school is located here as well. Campus resource facilities and major sports facilities are on this campus.

The Ang Kaew Reservoir is an attractive feature. It was built to supply water for the university. It is also a recreational area for campus residents and the local community. Back in the 1960s, this area was still forested. With conservation in mind, buildings were constructed between the trees. As a result, the campus still retains much of its original setting.

Near the main campus is the Suan Dok campus. It is closer to the city. This is the health sciences complex. It occupies a 110-acre site. You’ll find the faculties of medicine and associated medical sciences here. Nursing, dentistry, and pharmacy are also part of this campus. Maharaj Nakorn Chiang Mai Hospital is here as well. It is the largest teaching hospital in northern Thailand. Locals call it Suan Dok.

The Mae Hia campus is about 5 km south of the main campus. It covers 864 acres. This campus is home to the faculties of veterinary medicine and agro-industry. The School of Public Policy is also located here.

Chiang Mai University’s motto is “Attānaṃ Damanati Paṇḍitā”. This Pāli phrase means “The wise control themselves.” The university colors are purple. Chiang Mai University is affiliated with ASAIHL and the ASEAN University Network.
